What are Awareness Through Movement (ATM) classes?

The Feldenkrais Method helps to improve posture, movement and manage pain by teaching people to move in a way that is optimal for them as an individual: with comfort, ease and pleasure. Over time we unconsciously learn to move and think in habitual ways. We are taught that there is a right posture from an early age: shoulders back, stomach in, stand tall - which gets transferred into our movements - at the cost of feeling comfortable, as well as requiring a lot of effort to maintain posture and movement.

Awareness Through Movement classes involve a series of gentle guided movements where you are encouraged to direct your awareness to discover how you move. Over time you will learn to move in a way that is optimal for you as an individual minimising unnecessary work and effort.

Classes provide an optimal learning environment, where you learn at your own pace, in your own time, to move in a gentle way with ease, comfort, and enjoyment. You will discover and open yourself to new ways of moving. Movements that you didn’t think were possible, become possible, and likewise, this extends into other areas of your life including your thoughts and emotions.

ATM classes draw from multiple disciplines, providing a unique and comprehensive method to improve human function by increasing self-awareness through movement. The founder of the method, Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais, was an Israeli engineer, physicist and judo expert.
